#FilmCovenThursday! Continuing with our Spooky Season Film List, here is part 1 of our favourite Fantasy Gothic films. Nice.

It’s September, Coven and that means only one thing….(No, NOT seasonal depression, but that’s up next…)

It’s Spooky Season! The time of year where Witchy Types every where try to numb the agony of living in late stage capitalism and the shit show that is the politics of today by celebrating all thing Halloween. Its sacred time for many to just have some joy – I think Delia Deetz expresses our sentiments best:

As soon as the first leaf falls to the ground trust that I’m running for my big woolly knits and forcing my cottage core baking fantasy upon everyone. No one is  safe, and the best way I’ve found to calm this beast down is by providing it with some snacks and to watch a good film. Now, we know how complicated it can be deciding upon what film to watch so I’ve sorted out that tricky part too by curating a series of film lists based around specific and very niche ‘vibes’.

[For a start, I am a Pisces Sun & Moon, therefore everything I ever do and will do is based on vibes. I do not make the rules…]

The Best Witch Films to Watch Over Spooky Season Part 1

Best Films to Watch Over Spooky Season Part 2

Today’s topic is Fantasy Gothic films and every single one is a favourite of mine so this list is very special to my icy heart. And yes, of course there is a part two in the works…like I could just make one list on this particular genre!

The Love Witch

Watch Love Witch On Amazon

TLDR; A fabulously dressed Witch terrorizes men by giving them what they want.

A modern day  ‘Good for her’ cult classic – The Love Witch,(2016)  directed by Anna Biller, is a visually stunning and thematically rich homage to the Technicolor melodramas of the 1960s and ’70s. A genre-blending film that simultaneously pays tribute to and satirizes the romantic and witchcraft genres of the period. The film follows Elaine (played by Samantha Robinson), a beautiful and enchanting witch who is on a quest to find true love after her late husband broke her heart. Her journey takes her through a series of passionate and tumultuous relationships, all while practicing her magical arts (been there.)

It’s a darkly comedic, feminist, and visually sumptuous film that while it may not be for everyone due to its intentionally retro and campy style, those who appreciate its artistry and message will find it to be a bewitching and thought-provoking cinematic gem. It’s also one of those films that you get something from upon every watch. What you take away from it in your 20s is built upon when you watch in your 30s and so on. Basically, lets all just run off and set up a witchy queer commune, eh? Just say the word, Coven, and I’ll set up the go fund me.

If you don’t find yourself falling in love with the wardrobe then I don’t know what to say, as it’s fantastic! Also, let’s just give the eye make-up the appreciation it deserves. Yas, Mama worked that eye flick! With eye makeup that fabulous what’s a bit of homicide between friends, eh?

As I love to give a bit of everyday Emma lore in my posts – I actually WAS invited to the UK Film Premier of this film but couldn’t go as I had a last minute Client Pitch landed on me…. And people ask why I work for myself now…pft. I could’ve met the actors and everything, eurgh!

Legend (1985)

Watch: Its actually on a few of the free digital channels such as freeview etc. YEY, a win for once, eh?

TLDR; Tim Curry is in it.

Tim. Curry. I mean, I could have left it there but for those who like more details ‘Legend’ (1985) directed by Ridley Scott, is a visually stunning and fantastical film that takes us on a journey into a mythical world filled with magic and darkness. The costumes are simply to die for, and I certainly used to run around in an old bridesmaids dress pretending to be Princess Lilly, but then,  didn’t we all? A classic example of ’80s fantasy cinema, with amazing special effects and makeup. The film’s enchanting soundtrack by Tangerine Dream adds another layer of magic to the story (but actually super fans like myself will also know about the original soundtrack that came before that also slaps!). Legend remains a visually captivating and iconic piece of ’80s cinema, especially for fans of the fantasy genre.

Again, Tim Curry.

Image Credit: By bitplanet.biz – Fair use

Oh and a young,  Tom Cruise literally walks around with no trousers on for all of it as he plays ‘Jack’ a woodland dweller.  It’s also riddled with fairies, elves and other magical folk. Actually, thinking about it, Legend is basically the main cause of why people of a certain age’s have weird archetype crushes,  a penchant for LARPING as well a need deep in our DNA to run around the Forrest in a flowing Princess sleeved dress. IT’S A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT I TELL THEE!

How could I not share this Gem of an image between Tim Curry and Grace Jones?…GRACE. JONES. Credit: IMDB

On the topic of weird crushes, this leads us nicely into the reason why your femme friends of various ages read so many darn spicybooks….

Labyrinth

Watch: In the UK its on several of the free channel….Get. In.

TLDR; It has David Bowie in it…which again, I could leave there, but when have I ever turned down the option to talk at length about anything

Labyrinth (1986) directed by Jim Henson, is a truly beloved fantasy film that combines the imaginative puppetry of Henson with the charismatic presence (IYKYK) of David Bowie as the Goblin King. The film follows Sarah (played by the beautiful Jennifer Connelly) as she navigates a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King’s clutches. Labyrinth is a delightful blend of whimsy, adventure, and music, with Bowie’s iconic songs like “Magic Dance” adding to the film’s charm.

And yes, if he isn’t going to try to secure me by creating an epic ball room masquerade to impress me, I don’t want him.

The puppetry and practical effects are top-notch, creating a visually enchanting world that still captivates audiences even today. This film is a timeless classic and I couldn’t recommend it enough…*Manifesting a Labyrinth ballroom themed party*  Also hands up everyone who massively disagreed with Sarah at the end…like gurl, listen to Aunty Emma, being David Bowie’s Goblin slave Queen is literally THE GOAL.

Actually whilst I am here, there is also a UK based Labyrinth convention. Someone please come with me (and whilst you’re here, why not pay, eh?) I BEG YOU.

On an Emma lore note, my 30th Birthday was David Bowie Themed…I can’t remember much of it which is a good sign but my hilarious and beautiful friend Denica came as Jareth and its still one of my favourite memories. Trotting around London pissed with each group member dressed as an era of Bowie. I was Ziggy Star Dust as I had literally had the outfit laying around. I am not even joking.

The Company of Wolves

Watch on Amazon – and for a free version for the UK peeps, ITV

TLDR; Angela. Lansbury.

Eurgh, I LOVE HER. (And that has nothing to do with the fact she has a resemblance to me. It’s not her fault she’s pretty, let the Queen, Queen!)

Based on the screenplay by Angela Carter from her novella collection ‘The Bloody Chambers; The Company of Wolves  (1984), directed by Neil Jordan, is a unique and visually striking take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale. The film weaves a dark and dreamlike narrative filled with symbolism and metaphor, exploring themes of sexuality, fear, and transformation. Basically, if you asked a girl to make a film about puberty and the change from girlhood to womanhood, shed make this. Now, don’t be put off by that description as it’s also a fantastic horror film. The use of practical effects and makeup to depict the wolf transformations is astounding especially in these CGI times, and the film’s eerie atmosphere adds to its unsettling charm. Angela Lansbury’s performance as the grandmother is a standout. There are so many lil’ cameos as well. Terence Stamp as the Devil? SWOON.

The Company of Wolves is a thought-provoking and visually rich film that offers a fresh perspective on a familiar fairy tale. Like ‘The Love Witch’ it reveals so much more upon every rewatch. Again, I know I say this a lot but THE COSTUMES are sublime.

Simply one of my favourite films, EVER. I never ever get tired of it. It was the first film that I was able to actually sit through and watch when I was suffering my lil’ depressive episode aka ‘The Great Saddness’…eurgh if you’ve been there then you understand how monumental that is…and if you are going through that, I DOES get better, sweetie. I PROMISE.

Anyway, I’m working on a more in-depth piece on this film so watch this space!

The Last Unicorn

Image Credit: animationobsessive.substack.com and PLEASE also read the fabulous article on the making of the film via the above link.

Watch on: Amazon

 TLDR; Christopher Lee. Unicorns. Harpies.

The Last Unicorn (1982) directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., is a beautifully animated and emotionally resonant fantasy film based on Peter S. Beagle’s novel. The story follows a unicorn who embarks on a quest to find others of her kind, encountering a cast of memorable characters along the way. The soundtrack to this film is catchy and I still have the opening theme song playing in the background in my mind on repeat to this day. The voice cast is stacked including Christopher Lee, Mia Farrow and Alan Arkin. The film’s hand-drawn animation is simply sensational and highlights the artistry of traditional animation…which makes sense as the studio that made this went on to form THE studio Ghibli. Beware it does make you a wee bit weepy at the end.

There is truly a character for any demographic in this film, but I’m gonna end with THAT Molly Grue Scene. EURGH. Check out this article if you also find yourself crying and identifying with Molly Grue.

I cannot explain to you what this film means to many queer, trans, NeuroSpicy and anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or alone in the world. We stan.

Sending love to everyone who will never give up hope of seeing a real unicorn! ❤

Beetlejuice

Watch: In the UK its on a few of the free channels and Amazon

Ah of course Tim Burton is on this Fantasy / Gothic list, and rest assured he has a larger post coming.

TLDR; One of Tim Burtons Best works in his usually kooky, gothic and creepy style.

Beetlejuice (1988)  directed by Tim Burton, is a darkly comedic and visually inventive film that showcases Burton’s signature style. The story revolves around a recently deceased couple who seek the help of the eccentric and chaotic ghost, Beetlejuice, to rid their home of the living. Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Beetlejuice is a highlight, combining humour and grotesquery in a memorable way. Its such a funny film with really engaging characters and takes you to all sorts of kooky settings – on first watch you sincerely have no idea where the film is going which is unique in it’s self. The film’s quirky characters, whimsical afterlife setting, and Danny Elfman’s iconic score contribute to its enduring popularity. Beetlejuice is a cult classic that blends humour and the macabre in a way that only Tim Burton can.

The costumes are engrained in the of fashion preferences as so many people watched this as a child and fell in LOVE with it style. Lydia’s Red wedding dress haunts my dreams, and what do you know, Barb’s housewifey in-door dress is actually worn by quite a few of Gen Z right now. Lets not even cover the impact of the Monochrome stripes etc….as we all know.

Hands up who wanted to be Lydia Deetz? Oh, all of us, cool. I’ve fully made my peace with the fact that I have grown into a Delia instead.

Addams Family

Watch on Amazon

TLDR; Mortica and Gomez. (Children, please don’t take anything less than this, Love Aunty Ems x)

The ONLY film that you need to reference when someone asks what are your couple goals, “The Addams Family,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, is a darkly delightful and macabre comedy that brings to life the beloved and eccentric Addams family from Charles Addams’ cartoons. The film revolves around the eerie and unconventional clan, led by Gomez (The Legend that is Raul Julia) and Morticia (HRH Anjelica Huston), as they navigate the challenges of modern life and grapple with the return of long lost brother, Fester ( The brilliant Christopher Lloyd).

The film’s production design is a visual feast, capturing the dark and Gothic atmosphere of the Addams’ mansion with intricate details and quirky inventions serving as inspiration for future goth generations to come. “The Addams Family” explores themes of acceptance and family bonds, emphasising that love comes in many unconventional and spooky forms. Its catchy theme song, distinctive characters, and iconic one-liners have made it a beloved classic that continues to captivate new generations.

And of course, if it isn’t Gomez’s level of adoration or Cousins ‘IT’s’ vibe of compassionate Rizz, DUMP HIM

It’s also where I got introduced to ‘Great Aunt Calpurnia’ whom I have discussed before.

Phew! Now that is a list that is a delight for the eyes hopefully helped get some of y’all to agree on a film to watch tonight…if not, what more do you people want?! Seesh 😉

Hopefully, I’ve managed to inspire you to watch a film or maybe you have seen any of the above films? Let me know below in ze comment and/or on my social channels as I’m needy like that. But really, I am doing this because I love it and speaking to fellow Witchy Types so any thing that makes me feel less like I am screaming into the digital void is always appreciated ❤

The Best Witch Films to Watch Over Spooky Season Part 2

It’s officially Spooky Season so here is part 2 of the ‘Best Witch Films To Watch Over Spooky Season’ series – any recommendations? Let us know!

It’s that time again, Coven…September 1st which means that it’s officially Spooky Season and as Halloween hasn’t happened yet we’re still keeping up with our Halloween/Halloween tropes in film theme. As I had so much fun curating the first list last year I thought I’d carry it on, so here is part 2 of the ‘Best Witch Films To Watch Over Spooky Season’ series. If I still haven’t mentioned your favourite Halloween or spooky season film or you have a recommendation, please let me know below in our comments or via my social channels.

I am so excited about Part Two as one of my favourite movies of all time is featured…its at the bottom, I wonder if you can guess…hmm.

Part One Available here:

The Best Witch Films to Watch Over Spooky Season Part 1

But let’s get started shall we?

Image Credit: Bell, book and candle” by jon rubin is licensed under CC BY 2.0.

Bell, Book and Candle(1958): A witch, played by Kim Novak, uses her spells (and other charms) to make a man fall in love with her but later goes through a change of heart. Like many grotty little witchy children, I was initially taken in by the cat in this film because, CATS. It certainly caught my attention and thrived in my brain – oh how I loved how glamorous the witch was.

Where to Watch:

The Craft: Legacy (2020): A contemporary sequel to the AH-Mazing original film, which, lets be honest, for witches of millennial age was THE initial gateway into the practice… It follows a new group of aspiring teenage witches discovering their powers and the legacy left by previous witches. Full disclosure, I haven’t seen this one yet so it’s one my to watch list (Which is very shamefully getting as long as my Witchy Type to read pile) so I’m gonna give this a watch over the next few days and report back.

Where to Watch:

Link Credit: IMDB

The Covenant (2006): A group of wealthy young warlocks must confront their destined legacy as a terrible curse threatens their lives. Basically, a group of petty male witches seek revenge….what’s not to love? If you’re into that sort of early 00’s horror flick, this will be right up your street

Where to Watch:

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005): Based on C.S. Lewis’ novel, this epic fantasy adventure tells the story of four siblings who stumble upon a magical wardrobe transporting them to the enchanting land of Narnia. There is a fabulous Ice Witch involved who causes havoc and is also played by Tilda Swinton…like, yes please. I think anyone who has read this book or seen it visually has never approached a wardrobe in the same way again…That’s the one closet I’d happily walk into any day, honey!

Where to Watch:

The Skeleton Key (2005): Starring Kate Hudson as Caroline, a hospice nurse who takes a job caring for a stroke victim in a decaying Louisiana plantation. As she explores the mansion’s dark history and encounters the enigmatic couple played by Gena Rowlands and John Hurt, she becomes embroiled in a web of mystery and malevolent forces. The film’s atmosphere is steeped in Southern Gothic elements, and it weaves a suspenseful and unsettling narrative.

Where to Watch:

Into the Woods (2014): This musical blends various fairy tales and includes THE wicked witch, portrayed by [MOTHER] Meryl Streep. The characters journey into the woods to fulfil their deepest wishes [Yey!] but soon find themselves entangled in a complex web of consequences and moral lessons[Boo!]. The film skilfully blends humour and darkness, exploring themes of responsibility, and the complexities of ‘happily ever after.’ It’s a whimsical and thought-provoking journey that captivates audiences with its enchanting melodies and clever storytelling. You WILL be singing these tunes to yourself for days afterwards. Yes, James Corden is in it which is awful but again, Meryl Streep is also a witch in it…so it kinda evens out. Duality and all that I guess…

Where to Watch:

The Blair Witch Project (1999): Shot in a found-footage style, this supernatural horror film follows three student filmmakers who enter a Maryland forest to uncover the mystery behind the Blair Witch. Truly a great example of ‘If you can’t be famous be infamous’ the Witch gets limited screen time but she makes it WORK, honey.

Where to Watch:

Teen Witch (1988)

Quick reminder to the new readers that I am Queer as F**k annnnnnnd Neurospicy, so my opinions on this film should be judged through that frame point… I just love what I love, ok? The weirder the better in fact ❤

Truly one of the greatest movies ever made, and to this day many of us who have viewed this film question how it even got made. This film was truly manifested out of chaos and I am forever grateful. Bad? It’s terrible, but in the way a true cult classic is terrible, it’s saved by its sincerity which elevates it to high camp. Basically, it’s just a pile of 80’s middle class Americana and some witchcraft sprinkled on the side.

It’s hard to explain the film but basically a teen girl finds out she is a witch and malarky ensues…and THIS RAP SCENE happens.

Now try to watch that scene again without stopping at certain points to ease the cringe? Exactly, you can’t.

TOP. THAT.

And the best part is that this isn’t the only musical interlude in the film – as there are also  some fabulous random musical moments including a highly questionable girls locker room scene. Speaking of questions, this film is so brilliantly bad that you’ll find yourself asking questions long after it’s finished.

Clearly, this film is a special interest of mine and I will have to dedicate an entire article to it (give the audience what it wants as they say and that audience is well, me, in this instance). The fashions are also very 80’s and just oh, it’s magnificent.

Where to Watch

Have you seen any on the list, get a movie recommendation or are going to give one on the list a watch? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or via my social channels ❤  Now, I am off to go watch Teen Witch…

Now, without further ado… let’s summon the interview!

Q: Your book features witchcraft, manifestation, and a Book of Shadows. What kind of research did you do into real-world spellcraft and magical practices to make Morgana’s rituals feel authentic?

A: Researching for Wish You Dead was one of the most creatively enriching parts of the writing process. I wanted Morgana’s rituals to feel grounded and believable—not like something plucked from a fantasy film, but like they could really be performed by someone today. To achieve that, I approached the research from a few different angles.

I started with books—both contemporary guides on modern witchcraft and manifestation, and historical texts on the persecution of witches, especially during the early modern period. That gave me insight into how deeply personal and spiritual witchcraft has always been, and how much of it is rooted in reclaiming power, intention-setting, and community ritual. I read accounts of so-called witches who were accused for everything from healing with herbs to simply being “too independent,” and that fed into the emotional core of Morgana’s story.

Social media was surprisingly helpful, too. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are full of practicing witches sharing their Book of Shadows, altar setups, daily rituals, and thoughts on ethics, energy, and intention. Watching those gave me a real-time sense of how diverse modern magical practices are. It also helped me write rituals that felt real, not performative – although the dramatic element is absolutely part of Morgana’s persona!

Q: Do you believe in the power of manifestation or magic yourself? Did writing this book change your perspective on witchcraft at all?

A: Writing Wish You Dead has taken me on such an unexpected journey of discovery—both creatively and personally. I’ve always had a sense that we’re part of something bigger, that there’s more to life than what we can see or explain. The idea of gratitude isn’t new to me but diving into this book really deepened my understanding of manifestation and magic, especially the power of intention.

Before I started writing, I’ll admit I had a very simplified view of manifesting—something like hoping for what you want and then waiting for the universe to deliver it to your doorstep. But through writing Morgana’s story, I began to see it so differently. Manifestation, at its core, is about clarity, self-worth, and action. It’s about knowing what you truly want, believing you deserve it, and aligning your energy and efforts with that vision. That’s incredibly empowering, and it’s something I’ve carried into my own life.

Exploring witchcraft from a historical and contemporary perspective also shifted my mindset. I’ve come to see it not just as a spiritual path, but as a form of self-empowerment and deep connection—to nature, to intention, to your own voice. There’s something really magical in that, whether you identify as a witch or not.

So yes, I do believe in magic—but not in the Hollywood sense. I believe in the magic of energy, belief, intuition, and action. Writing this book didn’t just change my perspective on witchcraft—it expanded it.

Q: Morgana is a morally complex protagonist. How did you balance making her powerful yet vulnerable, feared yet relatable?

A: I love this question—because it taps right into one of the things I care most about in storytelling: the beautiful complexity of being human. And honestly, there’s no one more complex than a teenage girl.

In my other life, I’m a Deputy Headteacher, so I spend my days surrounded by teenagers—and that is an absolute gift. Seeing them move through the world, constantly adapting, questioning, reacting… it’s endlessly fascinating. I talk about duality a lot in Wish You Dead, but the truth is that teenagers go beyond duality. They’re shapeshifters. They assess the environment, read the energy in the room, and become who they need to be in that moment to survive, to stay safe, to belong. That kind of emotional agility is powerful—and often misunderstood.

So when I was writing Morgana, I didn’t want to flatten her into being just one thing. She’s strong, yes—but she’s also scared. She’s angry, but she’s also deeply vulnerable. She makes questionable choices, but they come from a place of pain, of grief, of trying to protect herself. And I think that’s what makes her real.

In many ways, it would have been far harder to write a one-dimensional teenage protagonist than a morally complex, contradictory, emotionally messy one. Teenagers are all of those things—powerful and fragile, brave and afraid, fierce and full of self-doubt. That’s not something to fix. That’s something to honour. And with Morgana, I wanted to do exactly that.

WIsh You Dead By Rebecca Wescott Image of book cover

Q: What’s your writing ritual? Do you have a “spell” for creativity (e.g., specific music, candles, etc.)?

A: If procrastination counts as a ritual, then yes—I’m deeply committed to mine! Before I can write a single word, the house has to be spotless (which obviously takes time), the right candles must be lit (scent and colour matter), and I have to find the perfect spot in the house to write—which, unhelpfully, seems to change every single day. Sometimes it’s the kitchen table, sometimes the bedroom floor, sometimes somewhere entirely impractical. It’s like a quest just to get into the right headspace.

For Wish You Dead, that headspace became even more specific. I brought a few magical tools into the mix to help anchor me in Morgana’s world. I kept a trio of crystals next to my laptop—carnelian for creativity, sodalite for intuition, and lapis lazuli for self-expression. Whether or not they “worked” in a traditional sense, they definitely helped me focus my energy and feel more connected to the story I was trying to tell.

Music was absolutely essential too—especially because one of the central themes of the book is female rage. I needed songs that tapped into that energy and let it rise to the surface while I wrote. Wicked Ones by Dorothy and How Villains Are Made by Madalen Duke were two standouts on my playlist—they helped me access that raw, unapologetic power that runs through Morgana’s journey. The right song at the right moment could pull me straight into Avalon and into her head, no matter how chaotic the rest of the day had been.

So yes, while I may not have a formal spell for creativity, I definitely have a ritual—and a healthy dose of superstition, mood-setting, and atmosphere-building. Writing, for me, is half craft and half magic. The trick is just showing up…after the house is clean, of course…

Huge thank you, to the fabulous Rebecca Westcott, for this spellbinding conversation! Wish You Dead is out now, and if you’re craving dark academia with a lethal twist, grab your copy [here]—or cross your fingers and enter our giveaway before Midnight Friday 17th July 2025!

When Mercury Magic landed on my desk, I was instantly curious. Anything promising to help navigate the pitfalls of Mercury retrograde, which occurs several times a year, is always intriguing. Each retrograde period brings its own set of challenges, making this book a timely and valuable resource.

Brown’s book is accessible to both astrology beginners and those with more experience. She begins with a detailed explanation of astrology basics and provides guidance on how to pull your birth chart if you haven’t done so before. This serves as a great refresher for those already familiar with astrology. Personally, it reignited my interest in understanding my birth chart. From the very first page, I was inspired to delve deeper into my astrological journey. I certainly learned a few things that I’d previously not quite appreciated were key to understanding and utilising my birth chart such as:

Key Takeaways from the Book:

  1. Born During Mercury Retrograde: I discovered that being born during Mercury retrograde can influence how I experience these periods. Interesting…For most people they can be relatively discombobulating but I have potential to thrive during Mercury retrograde. Nice For me. Mercury Retrogrades can be highly creative and productive times. This insight helped explain several productive phases in my life, aligning perfectly with past Mercury retrogrades.
  2. Mercury in Aries at 0 Degrees: The book highlighted the significance of having Mercury in Aries at 0 degrees. This placement is crucial for understanding my communication style and how I approach tasks. Mercury’s position in my chart is a driving force in my life and career. Where is your Mercury in your chart and how does it effect you?
  3. Digital Coven and Mercury Retrograde: My curiosity led me to explore the birth chart of my project, Digital Coven. Amazingly, it was launched on October 13, 2020, during Mercury retrograde. This revelation was a fascinating and validating moment, emphasising the profound influence of Mercury retrograde on creative endeavors.

Reflections on My Birth Chart:

  • Mercury rules communication and technology, which are central to my work in digital marketing and PR as well as my side other projects including Digital Coven….Spookey, eh?
  • The alignment of my creative projects with Mercury retrograde periods is striking, demonstrating the planet’s influence on my productivity and creativity.

As mentioned above I started Digital Coven the DAY a Mercury Retrograde started in October 2020. I also become self employed during a Mercury Retrograde…and I moved to London during a Mercury Retrograde. Coven, this is once again proof that you never stop learning and how empowering it can be when you learn and master your birthchart!

The Trickster Planet:

Mercury, often called the trickster planet, governs communication, technology, and travel. Understanding its retrograde periods can help mitigate challenges and harness its energy for creative and productive activities. It can also help us address lessons from our past that may need resolving (This is why you can often get texts from old friends or exes during these periods amongst other things, eurgh)

Book Impressions:

I thoroughly enjoyed Mercury Magic. The layout is visually appealing, with eye-catching illustrations that enhance the reading experience. The book is sturdy and well-made, reflecting the quality of its content which as a sensory person, I really appreciate, especially as I like to carry books around with me as I travel and loan them out to clients and students – which will be the destiny of this book as it’s a very good Astrology educational book around a very misunderstood astrological period.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about their birth chart and navigating Mercury retrograde. It’s an insightful and practical guide that has been incredibly helpful in my astrological journey – so what better recommendation than that, huh?

Rating: 9/10

In conclusion, Mercury Magic by Maressa Brown is a must-read for astrology enthusiasts and anyone looking to understand the impact of Mercury retrograde on their lives. Its comprehensive and accessible approach makes it a valuable addition to any bookshelf, a great gift for yourself or someone spiritual in your life.

WitchyType Book Club: Review: The Witches Workshop

The Witchy Type Book Club reviews The Witches Workshop by Melissa Jayne Madara. A great read for craft loving and practical witches!

Please note that this product was gifted and that the post may feature affiliate links. Click here for more info on this. All reviews are honest, and we are selective about what we publish as we have a very large reading pile to choose from, and your (The Coven) trust is the most important thing to us. ❤

About the Author:

Melissa Jayne Madara , magical expert, herbalist and witch, shares 60+ unique projects and techniques, many of which revive spells from the history of witches past. Approachable for beginners and stimulating for established practitioners, the crafts are clearly explained through luscious photographs, detailed research, useful charts, and easy-to-follow instructions.

The Witchy Type Book Review:

Ah, The Witches Workshop: A guide to Crafting your own Magical tools – I was excited to receive this in post. It’s sturdy and well made and the illustrations are printed to a very high standard, so we’re already winning when it comes to the sensory experience. Now, regarding its contents, from the author of The Witch’s Feast, it’s a fully illustrated, comprehensive introduction to the handicrafts of witchcraft. Through over 60 craft projects, it promises to help you learn all the techniques you need to create your personalised magical toolkit. Sounds fabulous to be honest, and flicking through the pages a few crafts already caught my attention. Magic Ink? Candles, you say?…I’m listening.

Considering myself a crafty type of person (A lot of Pisces in this birth chart) I decided to get to work on reviewing its contents and choosing a project or two to try (more content on this in later posts).  Fortunately, it’s an in-depth guide, accompanied by step-by-step images, so it wasn’t too hard to get to grips with some of the more simple craft projects, but some ingredients required maybe require more effort than a trip to your local store but not too hard to come by.

The book is split into 7 categories which adds to the fun:

Incense, including kyphi temple incense, which once billowed from the temples of ancient Egypt, to house blessing incense for cleansing any new home.

Inks, including dragon’s blood ink and botanical drawing charcoals.

Oils, such as flying ointment or the world’s first known chemist Tapputi’s royal salve.

Natural dyes for creating stunning eco-printed ritual gowns or a spring equinox altar tablecloth.

Papers, like Japanese knotweed paper or autumn equinox corn husk paper.

Powders essential for rituals and spells such as scrying powder and banishing salt.

Candles of all shapes and types, including poured, dipped and molded.

I really enjoyed this book and found myself returning to it a lot so I recommend it as an addition to any witchy library and as a gift.

Well researched and full of knowledge, it advises how you can create altars, rituals and spells that are targeted to your intention, personal and in touch with your natural environment.

Are you a crafty witch or aspire to be? If so let us know below or via our social channels and of course, make sure to share your project recommendations as we certainly are getting into our craft zone this Spring! Watch this space for more posts on the crafts from A Witches Workshop as we continue to delve into the projects.

Until next time, darlings!

Seasons For The Soul: Spells Of Nature

The Embroidered Art of Julia Van Den Bosch

Please note that this book was gifted for a review and may feature some affiliate links. For more information on our affiliate policy click here.

I was excited to receive this book. I had recently taken up embroidery as a hobby so a book mixing this current hyper fixation with witchcraft was always going to excite me. I wasn’t disappointed. I was presented with a book that expressed the beauty and magic of nature seen through the eye of a needle. The author uses hand embroidery in its traditional role of storytelling to share personal insights on nature’s gifts. Each stitch holds the emotion of the moment and keeps a record. Written during the pandemic, the book tells the story of the companionship and healing offered by the seasons during the enforced isolation of the pandemic, and how it enabled the artist to find beauty in solitude in their garden and beyond.

The imagery is beautiful and I admit that it got me started on a few hand embroidery projects, which made me appreciate Van Den Bosh skill even more. This style of embroidery is HARD.

About the Author:

Julia Spent her childhood in the Kent countryside and now lives happily with her family of animals in an old cottage in Surrey (Sounds Fabulous!)

After an exciting period of flying on Concorde, she reconnected with her spiritual side and decided to rediscover the gift of the smaller, yet still miraculous, marvels that lay within her own garden instead. Rediscovering her creative side, she found hand embroidery was the perfect way for her to share the beauty and magical life of nature, in all its sumptuous colour, texture and detail. She now shares these passions in her latest book.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book upon first reading and have found myself coming back to it. The imagery is something that I find myself revisiting so it would make a fantastic artist reference or coffee table book. The author shares unique and elevating insight into herbs, plants, crystals and more which any witch would appreciate. Some of the recipes may have hard to find ingredients but not impossible especially when they are in season. The photography is fantastic and helps bring the embroideries out onto the page, I still wish I could see them in person though! The detail of the work is spellbinding and it makes you begin to see pieces of fabric, old clothing and some cotton in a completely new way, Oh the possibilities!

I mean look at this:

Witchy Type: A Review of ‘The Mystical Journaling Kit’ by Maia Toll” #gifted

WitchyType Reviews: “The Mystical Journaling Kit” by Maia Toll, a mini companion for those looking to add a touch of magic to their daily journaling practice

(Note: The rating is based on the kit’s uniqueness, practicality, and its potential to resonate with both journaling enthusiasts and those interested in mystical elements. The product was gifted in return for an honest review, more details are available on our review policy here)

Ahoy there, fellow book enthusiasts! Today, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on “The Mystical Journaling Kit” by Maia Toll, a delightful companion for those looking to add a touch of magic to their daily journaling practice.

I’ve previously written about having issues with my morning journaling so I really pleased when it landed on my doorstep. As someone who values both creativity and self-reflection, I was immediately drawn to this kit’s promise of blending practicality with mysticism.

So, let’s get going with the review, huh?

Release date: 28th September 2023

Where to buy?

You can get it from the following stores (the amazon link is from my affiliate marketplace, more details here

Mystical Journaling Kit Product Review:

Kit includes:

  • 7 Stamps
  • 1 Gold Ink Pad
  • 1 Quartz stone
  • 1 Instruction book
  • 3 Sticker sheets

The heart of this kit is a petite yet profound mini book that’s just 2 1/2 x 3 inches in size. It’s packed with wisdom and guidance on how to initiate and nurture a magical journaling journey. Whether you’re a novice or seasoned journalist, you’ll appreciate the practical advice it provides. Please note that half of this book is blank space which offers a place to kickstart your own magical musings – but the practical side of the kit itself is what is intended for long term use, so I’d recommend getting a snazzy notebook as well if you really wish to delve into journaling regularly using the rest of the kit.

The fun practical elements that make this kit truly magical include 7 moon phase stamps and a metallic gold ink pad. These stamps allow you to chart the lunar cycles in your journal. For me, this added an extra dimension to my journaling, allowing me to be more organised in my recordings and keeping me in tune with the cosmos. If I want to use the stamps I need to know which moon phase we’re in, right?!  So I’ve certainly kept more up to date on the celestial weather report.

I’m not even gonna lie, I didn’t wait until I ‘d read the book to get going with testing the stamps and ink on the empty pages – and I wasn’t disappointed. I hadn’t noted that the ink was GOLD so when I saw the first stamp imprinted on the paper I was generally surprised and delighted (It honestly, doesn’t take much days)

You may have noted, dear reader, that I am a bit of a practical Witch so when the sticker sheets fell out of the back of the stamps packaging, I immediately started pondering how to use them. What’s journaling without a bit of personal flair? The three small sticker sheets, adorned with whimsical, magical illustrations are a fun addition but you don’t loads but two of those stickers are bunnies, so again, yey.

The kit includes a clear quartz crystal, a tiny gem (1/2 inch in length) that encourages moments of reflection and clarity before embarking on your journaling journey. It’s a simple yet powerful addition that sets the tone for a mindful experience.

While “The Mystical Journaling Kit” is undoubtedly enchanting, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Those who prefer a strictly pragmatic approach to journaling might find the mystical elements a tad whimsical. However, if you’re open to embracing a touch of magic and mindfulness in your writing, this kit promises a one-of-a-kind, enchanting experience.

Worth getting? Maia Toll’s “The Mystical Journaling Kit” is a treasure for anyone seeking to infuse their daily journaling with a sprinkle of magic. The kit has long term practical benefits and you can use the stamps, stickers and ink for others things as well so it’s not going to end up hidden on a shelf. It’s currently £10.99 so it doesn’t break the bank and could be a little payday treat.

For a gift? Yes, I think it’s a great beginner kit to provide as a gift with many long term benefits, it’s also in the sweet spot for the ‘gifting’ price range as well.

Rating: 8/10

Deck Review: Daily Magic Deck by Maia Toll [Gifted]

Emma shares her morning rituals as well as reviews the Daily Magic Tarot Deck [Gifted]

It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of everyday life and to feel guilty about not connecting spiritually as often as you like. There are only so many ways that you can add a bit of magick to a corporate meeting room, right? This is why getting into the habit of performing small daily rituals can really help with maintaining some regularity in your witchcraft practice and provides a center for your day.

I personally like to do my routines first thing in the morning when I’m able (and life often gets in the way so please don’t think I have my life together) These practices include:

  • Morning Coffee & Cinnamon – Stirring some cinnamon into my morning coffee whilst I set my days intentions is a great way to bring some abundance and focus into my groggy mornings
  • Sneaky lil’ Meditation – I try to sneak a quick meditation – which doesn’t have to be longer than a few minutes to help clear your mind. If it’s one of those days then I’ll lay in bed and just clear my mind and plan the day for 10 minutes before I get out of the pit.
  •  Pulling my tarot cards -Either a 1 or 3 tarot card pull each day to help guide my day. Journaling my tarot readings and patterns  is never a problem, as well, it’s kinda my job so it’s ingrained in me to do it…. but I do find myself staring at an empathy journal page from time to time if I am not using my tarot cards.
  • Journaling – I feel the need to write throughout the day as the inspiration (and ADHD) flows but for some reason my morning journaling is a weak point if I don’t have a tool.

Journaling being my soft spot  is why I was delighted to be gifted the Magickal card deck, ‘Daily Magic’ so that I could do a wee honest review.. I am never one to turn down a change to shuffle and pull a few cards and share my opinions so I grabbed my journal and got shuffling.

Description: Tap into your intuition and discover the magic all around you in this mini deck of mystical inspiration, featuring inspiration, mini-rituals and more from award-winning author Maia Toll.

Daily Magic Mystical inspiration deck

Product Review:

Entitled the Daily Magic: A Deck Of Mystical Inspiration for Your Everyday Life, it certainly looks the part with fabulous shades of green being featured on the deck’s encasing.  The cards also have a gold gilded edge which does please me I won’t lie and it’s currently held up after a few weeks use so this is a good sign.

Please note if you prefer the larger sized card decks or just have big hands that the deck is on the smaller side  (approx. 2 1/2 X 3″) – perfect for keeping in your palm or pocket and for traveling – which if you are anything like me (A swamp witch who carries a witchy version of a Mary Poppins bag) is a preferred criteria. Everyone likes their cards a certain way and we don’t card shame here.

The booklet is a few pages long, so short but sweet and features Maia’s advice on how to connect to magic in the modern world but doesn’t go too indepth into much detail therefore I’d recommend these cards for people wanting to learn more about spirituality who don’t mind having to research some of the areas that are mentioned on the cards, as well as other Magickal deck lovers.

The cards feature instructions for spells that you can action over the Lunar Calendar as well as other tips and insights that can help encourage more self insight into your practice.

The main attraction for me is that they serve as daily prompts to help build a magic routine. I found myself using them for meditating over my morning coffee as well as journaling prompts, which I appreciated on my more groggier mornings. The tips were useful and I have used a few in my practices which do earn brownie points. I have found myself still pulling from the deck, daily and I’ve since given them a home in a tarot bag that my niece brought me for my birthday. Packaging wise, I’d recommend getting a bag to carry your cards in as the packaging that the cards arrive in isn’t great for long term use.

Example of the witch tips on how to supercharge your magic

Good for gifting?

Yes! – This type of deck makes the perfect gifts for anyone who has expressed an interest in their spiritual side or is openly witchy. They do mention some subjects which a novice may have to find themselves having to research so I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner who wants a tool where they have everything they need right there and then. Overall, a lovely little gift to give to a friend (or yourself) that has long term use.

Pros:

  • A lot of good information and encourages further learning and journal prompts
  • Large number of cards in the deck
  • Travel sized .
  • Gold lined and green hued cards feed my mermaid/pisces dopamine receptors.
  • Friendly tone of voice

Cons?

  • The Booklet could be a bit longer but you do get a lot of cards for the price
  • If you are going to use the cards regularly or travel with them, I’d recommend getting a carry bag or case for the cards to keep them in good nick. For light use the packaging is fine and will look pretty on the shelf.
  • If you’re a grumpy cynical person you may find some of the wording fluffy or whimsical at times
